Why Luxaflex shutters are made for Australian summers

INSPIRATION

Australia has always been known for our long, hot summers – which are becoming even more so. Since 1950 every decade has been warmer than that before, and both day and night-time temperatures have increased steadily.1

This increasingly hot weather means it’s becoming even more important to find ways to stay cool and comfortable during the sunniest part of the day. Many people are also searching for smart and stylish ways to protect their home’s interiors from the damaging effects of the sun. This is where your choice of window coverings can play a key role.

Here at Luxaflex, all of our blinds have been specifically designed for the harsh Australian climate. Our Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters and Luxaflex® Timber Shutters are popular options for those wanting the sophistication of a traditional shutter, with the practicality of temperature control and interior protection.

Here’s why:

Let in the breeze. Block the sun

One of the great things about shutters is that they can simultaneously let air flow through your interior spaces, while also effectively blocking the sun’s direct rays.

The name ‘plantation shutters’ actually originated in the south of America. This type of slatted window covering was often used in very hot and humid climates, on farms or estates that grew coffee, tobacco, cotton or sugar. Shutters were designed to let air flow freely through interior spaces, keeping them cool.

Traditionally, the slats on plantation shutters were much larger and less  maneuverable. Today, our shutters all have narrow units which are hinged accordion-style, and cover a part of the window opening when closed. The louvres or slats are controlled by a tilt bar or rod to allow you to control light, air flow and visibility.

Also, as the sun’s direction changes, you can simply adjust the angle of your shutters accordingly. By blocking the flow of direct sunlight as it suits, you can effectively moderate the temperature inside your home.

Absorb heat at the window

Another great advantage of using shutters on your windows is that they actively capture and trap heat – preventing it from flowing into your interiors. Luxaflex PolySatin® Plantation Shutters, in particular, have a unique cellular construction which traps air within a distinct pocket. They are also made from a durable polyresin, which also helps repel heat back through the window.

Protect your furnishings and interiors

As well as helping you maintain your interior temperature, shutters can also play an important role in helping you protect your furnishings and fittings from the sun’s harmful rays. By breaking up light as it enters your home, you can keep your furnishings from fading over time.

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters are also very versatile and can be custom-made to fit windows of various shapes and sizes. While there are some limitations and restrictions, these shutters can be made to suit arches (half circle, half moon, quarter circle and gothic), angles (right and isosceles triangles, top and bottom sloped), hexagons and octagons. This means it’s possible to filter the flow of light through even the most unique window spaces.

Reduce glare in media rooms

The Australian sun can be incredibly strong – particularly in the summer months. As Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters and Luxaflex® Timber Shutters are very easy to angle, you can easily cut the glare from the sun in rooms where it can be very distracting, like a study or a TV room.

Other reasons to choose Luxaflex® shutters

As well as being specifically designed for Australian summers, there are plenty of other great reasons to choose Luxaflex® shutters for your home:

Customisation

You can choose from a wide assortment of sophisticated designs, and the shutters are available in three classic shades of white. They can also be customised with stylish valances, distinctive frames, three unique louvre sizes and tasteful hinge finishes.

Australian-made

When you buy Australian-made, you’re supporting our local workers, and the value of your purchase stays on-shore. You also get the peace of mind that your product has been uniquely designed for our environment and weather conditions.

Non-toxic

Made from a non-toxic polyresin compound, Luxaflex® PolySatin® Shutters also proudly comply with GREENGUARD Gold Certification standards. They have been rigorously tested and scientifically proven to emit low chemical and particle emissions, making them the ideal solution for all households especially those with young children.

Durable

Our plantation shutters are made from an advanced polyresin compound that makes them durable and easy to clean. Ink, crayon and other staining agents don’t tend to stay on the smooth surface and in most cases, blemishes can be removed by merely wiping them down with a soft damp cloth. Our traditional non-motorised shutters can also be easily detached from the window by a single person within seconds and can be simply cleaned with warm soapy water.

Ideal for wet rooms

Due to the fact that our shutters are impervious to moisture, and guaranteed not to blister, peel or fade, they really can be used all throughout the home, including in wet areas such as the kitchen, bathroom and laundry.
