When it comes to window coverings, one of the most difficult considerations can be the need to balance privacy with a desire to maintain a view to the outside. While in some rooms, like bathrooms and bedrooms, ensuring privacy will be an imperative, in others – like kitchens or living areas – you may be interested in more flexible options.
Here are some of the things to consider when balancing privacy and aspect.
Traditionally, blinds and shades have a top-down operation, which means they roll or fold up at the top of the window. While this is ideal for letting the maximum amount of light in during daylight hours, it also means there’s no ‘in between’ option – that is, they’re either open or closed.
It’s why Luxaflex has introduced top-down as well as bottom-up operation for our Luxaflex® Duette® Shades. These clever shades can actually be opened from either the top or bottom, depending on the orientation of your window, where the light is shining, and where you want privacy.
There’s also the option of Luxaflex® Vertical Blinds which are ideal for larger windows and doors. They can also be easily stacked to the left, the right or even split down the centre.
One of the great reasons to choose shutters for your windows is that they can be very easily angled and tilted to ensure privacy – while still letting light flow into your home. During the day, they can be completely opened for maximum visibility, and in the evening – or when privacy is required – they can simply be angled shut.
Luxaflex® Polysatin® Shutters can be used in lots of different ways – as a room divider, or to cover large windows or sliding doors. Plus, they can be created in a range of different designs depending on your needs, and are available in hinged, hinged bi-fold, bi-fold on track and by-pass on track formats.
As well as their durability, the privacy provided by these shutters is one of the reasons they’re so popular in wet areas like bathrooms.
Having absolute privacy isn’t always essential. Some rooms may, for instance, simply look out onto a garden area, or onto a courtyard. For rooms where total privacy isn’t a requirement, using a sheer or semi-sheer curtain can be a great solution – allowing you to gently filter the light entering your home, without completely obstructing the view to the outside.
Within the Luxaflex® Curtains range you’ll find a range of styles, formats and fabric choices. If you do you want to ensure total privacy with curtains, that’s certainly possible too, and there are blockout options available.
Another popular and very simple way to achieve the balance between privacy and view is to consider the Luxaflex® LumiShades® . These innovative blinds offer a contemporary take on classic vertical blinds – but with the elegance of a soft window furnishing. With Luxaflex®’s EDGE Vertical Track system and soft fabric, they offer a great balance of style, durability and privacy.
The soft fabric provides daytime privacy, while also allowing light to flow into the home. You can also easily adjust the level of privacy and light to suit your requirements by rotating the fabric vanes halfway. Then, to block light, you can then close the shades completely.
